Flan Dulce Coffee Syrup

Inspired by the flavors of traditional flan, this homemade syrup combines caramelized sugar, Madagascar vanilla bean, sweet cream, and warm baking spices. Perfect for coffee, lattes, cold foam, and desserts.

Makes: About 1½ cups syrup

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon Burundi vanilla extract
  • Pinch of fine sea salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Tiny pinch ground nutmeg

Instructions

Step 1: Caramelize the Sugar

Place the sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat.

As the sugar begins to melt around the edges, gently swirl the pan occasionally. Continue cooking until all of the sugar has melted and turned a rich amber color.

Tip: Do not walk away from the stove. Once sugar begins to caramelize, it can burn quickly.

Step 2: Add the Hot Water

Carefully and slowly pour the hot water into the caramelized sugar while stirring continuously.

The mixture will bubble and steam vigorously—this is completely normal.

Continue stirring until any hardened caramel pieces dissolve and the syrup becomes smooth.

Step 3: Add the Flan Flavors

Reduce the heat to low.

Whisk in:

  • Sweetened condensed milk
  • Madagascar vanilla paste
  • Salt
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg

Stir until fully combined and smooth.

Step 4: Cool

Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the syrup to cool completely.

Transfer to a clean glass bottle or jar.

Storage

Store refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.

Shake gently before each use.

Vanilla Note:

Start with 1 teaspoon of Burundi vanilla extract for a balanced flan-inspired flavor. For a richer vanilla-forward syrup, increase to 2–3 teaspoons based on your preference and the strength of your vanilla paste.

How to Use:

Flan Dulce Iced Latte

  • 1–2 tablespoons Flan Dulce Syrup
  • 2 shots espresso
  • 1 cup milk of choice
  • Ice

Add the syrup to a glass, pour in the espresso, add ice, then top with milk. Stir and enjoy.
